Heavy Rainfall, Hill Runoff and Tidal Surge Create Severe Waterlogging; Education Board Takes Decision to Ensure Students’ Safety

The Chattogram Education Board has suspended the HSC and equivalent examinations scheduled for Wednesday (July 8, 2026) due to severe waterlogging caused by continuous heavy rainfall, hill runoff and tidal surges across the region.

Chattogram and Higher Secondary Education Board Chairman Professor Abdullah Al Mamun announced the decision in a post on his personal Facebook account, saying that the combined impact of heavy rainfall, hill runoff and river tides had created severe waterlogging across Chattogram. Several low-lying areas have been flooded, severely disrupting normal life.

He said that considering the prevailing situation, all HSC and equivalent examinations under the Chattogram Education Board have been suspended. The affected districts include Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban.

Following the announcement, an emergency notice was issued with the signature of Chattogram Education Board Controller Professor Md Parvez Sazzad Chowdhury. The notice stated that the scheduled HSC and equivalent examinations under the Chattogram Education Board have been postponed due to adverse weather conditions and severe waterlogging.

The decision was taken as heavy rainfall caused widespread waterlogging in different parts of Chattogram and other areas under the board, creating transportation difficulties for examinees, guardians, teachers and examination officials.

Education authorities said the suspension was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and maintain a smooth examination process amid the challenging weather conditions.

The new schedule for the postponed examinations will be announced later, according to the Chattogram Education Board.

Heavy Rainfall Causes Waterlogging Across Chattogram

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused severe waterlogging in different parts of Chattogram city and surrounding areas. Several roads and residential neighbourhoods have gone underwater, disrupting normal activities.

Students, teachers and guardians have faced difficulties reaching examination centres due to submerged roads and transportation challenges. Considering the overall situation, the education board decided to suspend the examinations to ensure safety.

Education officials said the priority remains protecting students and maintaining a safe environment for examinations during the ongoing adverse weather situation.

The authorities have urged students and guardians to follow official announcements from the Chattogram Education Board and avoid relying on unverified information circulating on social media.

The 2026 HSC and equivalent examinations began across the country on July 2. A total of 1,270,583 students are participating in this year’s examinations.

The examinations are being held at 2,697 centres nationwide. This year, for the first time, the nine general education boards are conducting the HSC examinations using a common question paper system.

Authorities said they are closely monitoring the rainfall and waterlogging situation and will take necessary steps to ensure the safety and convenience of students, teachers and examination staff.
