Landslides hit Rangunia, Sitakunda and Chattogram city

At least four people, including a 10-month-old infant, have been killed in separate incidents of landslides and a wall collapse triggered by incessant rainfall in Chattogram.

Chattogram Civil Surgeon Dr Jahangir Alam confirmed the fatalities to CTG Mail at around 7:30 pm on Wednesday.

According to the Civil Surgeon’s Office, Renura Begum, 54, was killed in a landslide at Ishakhali Adarsha Village in Rangunia on July 7. On the same day, Md Shafiqul Islam, 32, died after a wall collapsed in Rahman Nagar (B-Block) under Panchlaish Police Station in Chattogram city.

On July 8, 10-month-old Md Ashraful Islam was killed in a landslide at Samaj Bagan Bari in Jangal Salimpur, Sitakunda. In another incident on the same day, Samia Akter, 11, died in a landslide at Chashma Hill in the Mayor Goli area of Chattogram city.

Dr Jahangir Alam said continuous heavy rainfall has heightened the risk of landslides and wall collapses. He urged residents living in vulnerable hillside areas to move to safer places, adding that the health authorities and other relevant agencies remain on alert.
