A container vessel lost control after suffering a steering malfunction and collided with a navigation buoy before getting stuck on a retaining wall in the Chattogram port channel on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 2:30pm while the vessel, MV CNC Uranus, was navigating through the channel.

Immediately after the accident, the Chattogram Port Authority launched a salvage operation to move the vessel to a safe location. Port tugboats Kandari-4 and Kandari-11 were deployed, while teams from the Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard also joined the rescue efforts.

Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Syed Refamayet Hamim said the vessel developed a sudden steering failure while passing through the channel, causing it to lose control.

“As a result, the ship struck Buoy No. 2 and later became lodged against the retaining wall,” he said.

He added that no casualties have been reported and the accident has not disrupted vessel movement through the main port channel.

Port officials said salvage operations are continuing to remove the vessel safely, while an assessment of the incident is also underway.
