The Chattogram District Administration has ordered eight emergency shelters to remain ready as continuous heavy rainfall increases the risk of landslides and waterlogging across the city.

The directive was issued on Tuesday through an official order signed by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah. The move has been taken as a precautionary measure to protect residents living in vulnerable areas and ensure a quick response if the weather situation worsens.

According to the district administration, a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has moved northwest, causing heavy to very heavy rainfall in the southeastern region of Bangladesh. The ongoing rain has increased the possibility of landslides in hilly areas and waterlogging in low-lying parts of Chattogram.

As part of the emergency preparedness plan, eight educational institutions across four metropolitan circles have been selected as temporary shelters. Officials have been instructed to ensure that the shelters are fully prepared and can accommodate people if evacuation becomes necessary.

In the Chandgaon Circle, Al-Hera Madrasa and Rashidia Madrasa have been designated as emergency shelters. In the Agrabad Circle, YWCA Community School and Imrul Quran Mohibbia Diniya Orphanage have been selected. Firoz Shah Government Primary School and B Block Government Primary School will serve residents in the Katoli Circle, while Lalkhan Bazar Government Primary School and Shahid Nagar City Corporation Girls’ High School have been prepared under the Bakalia Circle.

The Deputy Commissioner has instructed officials responsible for each circle to ensure the availability of essential facilities at the shelters. They have also been asked to maintain coordination with relevant government agencies and take immediate steps to relocate residents from high-risk areas whenever required.

Earlier, the district administration conducted awareness campaigns through loudspeaker announcements in different hillside and foothill areas of Chattogram. Residents living in risky locations were urged to move to safer places and remain alert as heavy rainfall continues.

Chattogram has remained vulnerable to landslides during the monsoon season due to heavy rainfall and settlements near hills. Every year, several areas of the city face increased risks as continuous rain weakens hill slopes and creates the possibility of sudden landslides. Authorities have repeatedly warned residents living in risky areas to follow safety instructions and avoid staying in dangerous locations during severe weather.

The district administration said field-level officials are monitoring the situation and will take immediate steps if weather conditions deteriorate. Emergency response teams have also been asked to remain prepared to handle any unexpected situation.
