Chattogram, July 16 (CTG Mail): Chattogram observed July Martyrs’ Day 2026 with solemnity on Wednesday as the District Administration organised day-long programmes to honour the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising. The observance featured floral tributes, a discussion meeting and the foundation stone ceremony of the Shaheed Wasim Akram Memorial, attended by senior government officials, law enforcement representatives, martyr families and distinguished guests.

The day’s programmes began at 6:00am with the laying of wreaths at the July Memorial. Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr Md Ziauddin paid the first tribute, followed by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah and officials of the district administration.

Senior officials from law enforcement agencies also paid their respects, including CMP Commissioner Md Shawkat Ali, Chattogram Range DIG Md Moniruzzaman, Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam, BPM, along with representatives from the Public Works Department, Bangladesh Railway and other government organisations. Members of the families of the July martyrs also offered floral tributes in memory of their loved ones.

A discussion meeting was held later at the Chattogram Circuit House Conference Hall, where speakers reflected on the significance of the July Mass Uprising and the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives. The event was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, while Divisional Commissioner Dr Md Ziauddin attended as the chief guest.

Among the special guests were Additional DIG of Chattogram Range Md Nazimul Haque, CMP Additional Commissioner Muhammad Faisal Ahmed, SP Md Masud Alam, BPM, and senior officials of the district administration and other government departments. Families of the martyrs and those injured during the uprising also joined the programme.

Speakers said the sacrifices of the July martyrs would continue to inspire future generations to uphold democracy, justice and humanity. They stressed the importance of preserving the history of the July Mass Uprising and building a fair, inclusive and democratic Bangladesh.

Following the discussion, officials laid the foundation stone of the Shaheed Wasim Akram Memorial, dedicated to the memory of Wasim Akram, recognised as the first martyr of the July Mass Uprising in Chattogram.

The ceremony was attended by State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraq Hossain, MP, Shaheed Wasim Akram’s father Shafiul Alam, MP Mohammad Abu Sufian (Chattogram-9), senior government officials, members of law enforcement agencies, martyr families and local residents.

A special prayer was offered seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of the July martyrs, speedy recovery for those injured during the uprising and continued peace, progress and prosperity for Bangladesh.

The District Administration said the observance reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to preserving the legacy of the July martyrs and carrying forward their ideals in building a just, democratic and humane Bangladesh.
