Nearly 595,000 people affected as thousands remain stranded across 16 upazilas and the metropolitan area

At least 13 people have died and 12 others have been injured as continuous heavy rainfall, flash floods from upstream areas and landslides continue to wreak havoc across Chattogram district, affecting nearly 595,000 people and leaving thousands of families stranded.

The latest figures were disclosed in a report released by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Sunday.

According to the report, signed by Chattogram District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Masudur Rahman, floodwaters had inundated vast areas across 16 upazilas and the metropolitan area as of 12:00pm on July 12.

The affected areas include Chattogram metropolitan area along with Banshkhali, Sandwip, Satkania, Anwara, Karnaphuli, Sitakunda, Mirsharai, Hathazari, Raozan, Rangunia, Boalkhali, Patiya, Chandanaish, Lohagara and Fatikchhari upazilas.

Death Toll Reaches 13

Officials said 13 people have so far lost their lives due to floods and landslides triggered by persistent rainfall and hill runoff, while another 12 people sustained injuries in separate incidents across the district.

Nearly 595,000 People Affected

The disaster has affected an estimated 595,000 residents, with 152 unions and municipalities remaining inundated by floodwaters.

Government estimates show that around 147,500 families are currently living in complete isolation as floodwaters continue to submerge homes, roads and community infrastructure in many parts of the district.

Hundreds Take Shelter Across the District

In response to the worsening humanitarian situation, the district administration has opened 580 shelters for displaced residents.

So far, around 21,900 people have taken refuge in these emergency shelters established across flood-affected areas.

Relief Distribution Continues

Authorities said relief activities are continuing in coordination with local administrations and emergency response agencies.

Of the 1,200 metric tonnes of rice allocated for relief operations, 710 metric tonnes have already been distributed among affected communities.

Additionally, Tk 60 million has been disbursed from the total allocation of Tk 85 million earmarked for emergency cash assistance.

To address immediate food shortages, officials have distributed 39,250 packets of dry food and 15,100 packets of cooked meals among flood victims.

Additional Relief Stocks Remain Available

The district administration currently has 490 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 25 million in reserve for further distribution based on field assessments and emerging needs.

Authorities said relief and rehabilitation efforts would continue as long as the flood situation persists.

Authorities Remain on Alert

Disaster management officials warned that additional rainfall in upstream areas and surrounding hills could worsen flooding and increase landslide risks in vulnerable locations.

Local administrations, emergency responders and government agencies remain on alert to respond to any further deterioration in the situation.
