State Minister Anindya Islam Amit Distributes Relief to Flood Victims in Chattogram Amid Severe Waterlogging

State minister inspects inundated areas, oversees drainage efforts and distributes food aid among affected families
Heavy rainfall and flooding that have battered Chattogram since early July prompted a large-scale relief and inspection programme on Saturday, led by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit.
Acting on the instructions of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, the state minister visited several flood-hit and waterlogged areas across the port city and distributed relief materials among affected residents.
As part of a pre-scheduled programme, Amit first visited the inundated C&B Tekbazar Pol area at around 11:00am, where he spoke with residents affected by flooding and distributed dry food and rice among vulnerable families struggling with the impacts of prolonged rainfall and waterlogging.
Later, at approximately 12:30pm, the state minister inspected the waterlogged conditions and drainage systems at several key locations, including Mohesh Khal near Foillatoli Bazar, Baroni Ghat Khal, Halishahar Police Station Road and Jelepara Road.
During the visit, he reviewed the ongoing water drainage operations and discussed measures to improve the city’s flood response and minimise public suffering caused by persistent rainfall.
Following the inspections, Amit attended a relief distribution programme at Lucky Square Community Centre near Foillatoli Bazar in South Kattali Ward No. 11, where he distributed rice and dry food packages among 500 flood-affected families as chief guest.
The programme was attended by several senior political leaders and government officials involved in the emergency response operation.
Special guests included Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain, Chattogram-8 lawmaker and Convener of Chattogram Metropolitan BNP Ershad Ullah, and Chattogram-10 Member of Parliament Sayeed Al Noman.
Senior officials involved in field-level monitoring and emergency management were also present, including Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah, Chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority Engineer Belayet Hossain, and Director General of the Bangladesh Army’s 34 Engineer Construction Brigade (34 ECB) Brigadier General Shamsul Alam Shams.
Leaders of the BNP and its affiliated organisations also participated in the humanitarian initiative, including Chattogram Metropolitan BNP members Syed Sehab Uddin Alam, Jafar Ahmed and Md Azam, alongside local party leaders and activists.
According to district administration data, continuous rainfall since July 5 has affected approximately 595,000 people across Chattogram district.
Authorities reported that 13 people have died and 12 others have been injured in flood and rain-related incidents so far.
A total of 21,900 people have taken shelter in 580 emergency shelters opened across the district to accommodate displaced residents.
To support affected communities, authorities have already distributed 710 metric tonnes of rice, nearly Tk 6 crore in financial assistance and 39,250 packets of dry food.
An additional 15,000 packets of dry food have also been distributed, while another 490 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 27.25 million have been allocated for emergency response and will be distributed as required, according to officials.
Local authorities said relief operations and monitoring activities will continue until the flood situation improves and affected residents can safely return to normal life.
