In response to the suffering caused by days of incessant rainfall and record-breaking precipitation in Chattogram, Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain distributed relief materials among thousands of affected residents on Friday.

Accompanied by Chattogram-8 lawmaker Alhaj Ershad Ullah and Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Engineer Belayet Hossain, the mayor visited several flood-hit areas under Ward No. 3 in Panchlaish, including Wazedia, Board Office, Chalitatali Bazar, Hajipara, Beltala and Shahidnagar along the Oxygen-Kuaish connecting road.

During the visit, Mayor Shahadat spoke with residents stranded by floodwaters, listened to their concerns and distributed cooked meals and relief materials among thousands of people staying in shelters, educational institutions and affected neighborhoods.

Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the mayor’s office has distributed cooked and dry food among nearly 10,000 families across different wards of the port city.

Speaking during the inspection, Mayor Shahadat said that many parts of Chattogram had experienced severe waterlogging due to unusually heavy and record rainfall.

“We have not remained idle since the rain began. Chattogram City Corporation, CDA, Chattogram WASA, the Bangladesh Army’s 34 Engineer Construction Brigade, the district administration and Fire Service have been working together through coordinated efforts,” he said.

He added that authorities have been monitoring the situation on the ground, identifying drainage bottlenecks and taking measures to ensure the quick removal of stagnant water.

“Our first priority is the safety and well-being of the people. Rescue operations, shelter support, food distribution and efforts to ease waterlogging will continue until the situation returns to normal,” the mayor said.

He also instructed engineers and officials to expedite water drainage, keep canals and drains operational and take emergency measures in the worst-affected areas.

Among those present during the inspection were CCC Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, Executive Engineer Rifatul Karim and Deputy Chief Conservancy Officer Pranab Sharma, along with other senior city corporation officials.

Earlier in the day, Mayor Shahadat, accompanied by MP Ershad Ullah, visited several waterlogged areas in Chandgaon, including Hajir Pul, Chandgaon Residential Area, Balurtal, Ananya Residential Area and Shamsherpara.

The mayor distributed cooked and dry food among around 1,000 families and sought opinions from local residents regarding the causes of waterlogging, obstacles to drainage and possible solutions.

Several local BNP leaders, including members of the party’s metropolitan committee and ward-level leaders, were also present during the visits.
