80% of Chattogram Cleared of Waterlogging, Says Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain

Mayor, MP Ershad Ullah inspect flood-hit areas, distribute relief and assure residents of swift drainage efforts

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain on Friday said that nearly 80 percent of the city’s waterlogged areas have already been cleared, following several days of heavy rainfall that left many neighbourhoods inundated.
The mayor made the remarks while visiting waterlogged areas in Chandgaon alongside Chattogram-11 Member of Parliament Ershad Ullah. During the visit, the two leaders inspected the situation on the ground, spoke with affected residents and distributed relief materials among families impacted by the flooding.
The inspection covered Chandgaon Hajir Pool, Chandgaon Residential Area, Balurtal, Anannya Residential Area, Shamsherpara and several other low-lying neighbourhoods. They assessed drainage conditions, identified locations where water remained stagnant and gathered feedback from local residents regarding obstacles preventing the quick discharge of floodwater.
Speaking after the visit, Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said that water had already receded from most parts of the city, although several low-lying areas were still experiencing waterlogging.
“Around 80 percent of the city’s waterlogged areas have already been cleared. Some low-lying neighbourhoods still have standing water. We are working closely with local residents to identify the reasons behind the slow drainage so that immediate corrective measures can be taken,” he said.
The mayor expressed hope that the remaining affected areas would also become free of water within a short period.
He said officials of the Chattogram City Corporation were continuing round-the-clock operations to improve drainage, clear blocked canals and remove other obstacles that hinder water flow.
“Our priority is to minimise public suffering by ensuring that any barriers to drainage are removed as quickly as possible,” he added.
MP Ershad Ullah said coordinated efforts involving the city corporation, local representatives and community members were underway to resolve the remaining waterlogging problems.
“The areas where water is still stagnant will also be cleared very soon. Necessary measures are being taken through coordination among the Chattogram City Corporation, elected representatives and local residents,” he said.
He also assured residents that the government would continue providing assistance to affected families.
“The government stands beside people affected by waterlogging. Necessary support will continue until the suffering of affected families is reduced. No affected family will be left without assistance,” the lawmaker said.
During the inspection, the mayor and the MP listened to residents’ complaints and recommendations before instructing the concerned officials to take immediate action where necessary.
They reaffirmed that coordinated efforts with local communities would continue to ensure a sustainable and long-term solution to Chattogram’s recurring waterlogging problem while supporting families affected by the recent heavy rains.
