A sea truck service on the Chattogram–Sandwip route is set to start within the next 10 to 15 days following a request from Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Engineer Belayet Hossain.

The initiative was taken after CDA Chairman Belayet Hossain raised Sandwip’s long-standing water transport crisis during a recent meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The Prime Minister later instructed the concerned authorities to take necessary steps to resolve the issue, according to sources.

State Minister for Shipping Rajib Ahsan informed the CDA chairman about the development over the phone on Wednesday.

Speaking to CTG Mail, Engineer Belayet Hossain said, “I highlighted the long-standing transport difficulties faced by the people of Sandwip during my meeting with the Prime Minister. He directed the Shipping Ministry to take quick steps to address the issue.”

He added that the Prime Minister assured him that ferry services on the route would be introduced before the next monsoon.

“For the development of Sandwip, we are also working on gradually transforming the area into a tourist destination,” the CDA chairman said.

The absence of a reliable water transport system has caused prolonged suffering for Sandwip residents. The introduction of sea truck services is expected to improve passenger movement between Chattogram and Sandwip, while the planned ferry service is expected to provide a long-term solution to the route’s communication crisis.
