Chattogram City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain visits the scene after heavy rainfall triggers a deadly landslide at Chashma Hill

One person was killed in a landslide at Chashma Hill in the Mayor Goli area of Chattogram on Wednesday noon as continuous heavy rainfall continued to batter the port city.

According to local sources, the incident took place on July 8, 2026, when a portion of the hill suddenly collapsed following hours of persistent rainfall, burying the victim under a mass of soil and debris.

Residents of the area rushed to the spot immediately after hearing a loud sound and finding that a section of the hill had caved in near nearby settlements. Local people, with the help of others in the neighbourhood, started rescue efforts and recovered the victim from beneath the debris.

However, the person had already died from injuries sustained in the landslide before being rescued, witnesses said.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by residents living near vulnerable hills in Chattogram during the monsoon season. Continuous rainfall over the past several days has saturated hill slopes across the city, significantly increasing the risk of landslides.

Following the incident, Dr Shahadat Hossain, Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, visited the site and inspected the affected area.

During the visit, the mayor spoke with local residents and instructed the concerned officials to strengthen monitoring and preparedness measures in landslide-prone areas across the city.

He also urged residents living near vulnerable hills and slopes to remain cautious and move to safer places whenever necessary, particularly if heavy rainfall continues in the coming days.

Local residents said the rain had continued since morning, causing soil erosion and weakening the structure of the hill. Many expressed fears that additional portions of the hill could collapse if heavy rainfall persists in the coming days.

Officials and disaster management authorities have urged residents living near risky hill slopes to remain alert and move to safer locations whenever necessary.

Every year, landslides claim lives in Chattogram during the monsoon season, particularly in areas where houses have been built close to unstable hills or where illegal hill cutting has taken place over the years.

Experts have repeatedly warned that unplanned settlements, deforestation and indiscriminate hill cutting have made many areas of the city increasingly vulnerable to disasters during heavy rainfall.

The latest tragedy occurred at a time when several parts of Chattogram were already struggling with severe waterlogging caused by continuous downpours. Various government agencies have been working to address drainage problems and reduce public suffering resulting from flooding and stagnant water.

Residents of Mayor Goli and surrounding areas called on the authorities to take stronger preventive measures to protect people living in landslide-prone zones and to ensure that vulnerable families are relocated to safer places.

With meteorologists forecasting more rainfall in the Chattogram region over the coming days, concerns remain high over the possibility of further landslides and related disasters across the city’s hilly areas.

Authorities continued monitoring vulnerable hill areas across the city and urged residents to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by the administration.
