Lawmaker Calls for Public Support Amid Severe Waterlogging; Urges Citizens to Prevent Drainage Blockage Through Responsible Waste Disposal

Chattogram-10 lawmaker Sayeed Al Noman has called on BNP leaders and activists across the city to stand beside people affected by severe waterlogging caused by continuous heavy rainfall.

In a statement on Tuesday, the BNP lawmaker expressed deep concern over the suffering of city residents and urged party workers to extend support to those facing difficulties due to the worsening weather situation.

“Chattogram is our beloved city. People are suffering greatly because of waterlogging. This is a long-standing problem. It cannot be resolved in a single day, but a permanent solution is not impossible,” SayeedAl Noman said.

He said the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) and Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) are working together under ongoing initiatives to address the city’s drainage crisis.

However, he stressed that public awareness and responsible behaviour are essential alongside government measures.

“Projects alone cannot bring a solution if people do not become aware. We must stop throwing waste here and there. Plastic and polythene should not be dumped into canals, drains or waterways,” he said.

He also urged citizens not to block natural water flow and avoid constructing structures over canals and drainage channels, saying that collective efforts are necessary to overcome the city’s recurring waterlogging problems.

The statement came as record rainfall triggered severe waterlogging in different parts of Chattogram on Tuesday. Several low-lying areas, roads and neighbourhoods went under water, disrupting normal movement and causing widespread public suffering.

The situation became more alarming after a wall collapsed in the Hillview Rahman Nagar area of the city during the heavy rain, leaving one person dead.

Sayeed Al Noman called upon BNP leaders and activists to remain beside affected people during the crisis.

“Wherever you are during this disaster, extend a helping hand to people as much as possible. Let us prove that people’s trust and love are our greatest strength,” he said.

He said political workers should play an active role in helping communities during emergencies and support people regardless of their background.

Meanwhile, city authorities have continued drainage operations to reduce waterlogging and ease public suffering. Officials have urged residents to remain alert as heavy rainfall continues and warned people living in vulnerable areas to follow safety instructions.

The lawmaker also emphasized that solving Chattogram’s long-running waterlogging problem requires cooperation between government agencies and citizens. Proper waste disposal, protection of canals and maintaining natural drainage systems are crucial for achieving a lasting solution, he added.
